History
The knoll the town grew around.
Olde Town Estates sits on a small knoll, about 2,140 feet high, just south of Roanoke Street and east of Miller Street, about seven-tenths of a mile east of the courthouse square. When federal surveyors mapped Christiansburg in 1932, the town’s boundary, drawn on the map as a hatched red line, ran right across this knoll: the downtown blocks lay on one side and open hillside on the other.
Over the next half century the town filled in around it. The government map made from 1963 aerial photographs shows houses lining Miller Street to the west and a grid of new streets to the east and south, and the knoll itself shaded green for woods, with only a couple of buildings, still just outside the town limits of the day. The revised maps of 1970, 1978 and 1983 add house after house on the surrounding blocks, printed in purple as each revision did, and leave the knoll wooded every time.

It was finally built on around the turn of the century. Olde Town Estates was recorded in the county’s Plat Book 19, and its houses went up from 2000 to 2002, with one more in 2019. Two parcels on the plat were kept as green space.
Timeline
- 1932Federal surveyors draw the town boundary right across the knoll.
- 1963Aerial photographs for the government map show the knoll wooded, with houses all around.
- 1983The last revision of the map still shows the knoll wooded.
- 2000The first houses go up; most are finished by 2002.
- 2019One more house is added.
Good to know.
On the old line
The town’s 1932 boundary, as drawn on the government map, crossed this knoll.
Saved for last
Maps of 1965, 1970, 1978 and 1983 all show the knoll wooded while the blocks around it filled in.
Green space
Two parcels on the plat are set aside as green space, by the county’s records.
