History

An old Christiansburg name.

Snidow Heights was laid out on a plat recorded as the Map of Snidow Heights. A second section, Snidow Heights No. 2, on Park Street and Haymaker Street, was drawn up but never recorded, the Town’s minutes note. Its houses on record date from the 1940s on.

The Snidow name runs through the town’s oldest records. A Christian Snido, as the act spells it, was one of the nine trustees named when Christiansburg was established in 1792. Downtown, a cabinetmaker named Christian Snidow built a house about 1843 that is now the core of a commercial building, and a building of 1915 on Main Street stands over a spring known as Snidow’s Spring. No source says how the neighborhood got its name.
