History

A block from the square.

The Pepper Street Townhomes, on Jennifer Street and Darci Drive, went up from 1995 to 1998 in one of the oldest parts of town. The courthouse square, where Main and Franklin streets meet, is about a fifth of a mile northwest.

Next door is the South Franklin Street Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1991. Its street was laid out in the town’s first plan and was once labeled Little River, for where it led. First Street, a block south of Main, was laid out in 1813 and was long called Long Alley. The district’s houses run from the mid-1800s, among them the Miller House, where the folk artist Lewis Miller visited a cousin, to bungalows, Colonial Revival houses and two Tudor Revival houses of the 1930s. One, The Huts of 1919, is built of round rooms behind an iron fence that came from the old county courthouse.
