History
Named for the railroad town.
Cambria Crossing was built as a planned housing development; in 2017 the Town’s planning staff pointed to it as an example of that kind of zoning. Water mains for its first phase were laid in the town’s 2006 to 2007 fiscal year, and by 2014 its builder was Stateson Homes. Its homes have gone up in phases from 2007 to this decade.
It shares its name with Cambria, the village that grew up around the railroad depot a mile north of the courthouse in the 1850s, was a town of its own from 1906 and joined Christiansburg in the mid-1960s.
Three of its streets share their names with landmarks of old Cambria. The Dew Drop Inn is the name of a Cambria commercial building of about 1908 whose upper floor held the county’s first hospital; the Phoenix Furniture Factory was one of the industries working near the Cambria depot by 1913; and T. A. Roudabush’s flour mill appears on the Cambria sheet of the town’s 1921 fire insurance maps.
Timeline
- 1854The railroad reaches the depot that Cambria grows around.
- 1906Cambria is incorporated as a town.
- 1965Cambria and Christiansburg are consolidated (1964 by the state’s record).
- 2007Water mains for the first phase are laid; the first homes are built.
