History

The town’s first name.

Hans Meadow shares its name with the place where Christiansburg began. In 1789 the General Assembly told Montgomery County’s justices to meet at the house of James Craig and choose a site for the county’s court, and after 1790 the court sat at Craig’s house and tavern at Hans Meadow. The town laid out around the new courthouse was established in 1792 and named Christiansburg.

The state historical marker for the town, put up in 1934, stands on Roanoke Street about a sixth of a mile south of the neighborhood’s center. It says the town was originally known as Hans Meadows, and that it became an important place on the route to the West.

The neighborhood itself is much newer: its houses on record went up from 1970 into the 1990s, most of them in the 1980s.
