History

Houses from the 1920s on.

Alleghany Park has some of the oldest houses of any neighborhood on this site: its houses on record begin in the 1920s, and it kept growing through the 1940s, 1950s and later. Circle Park, a town park, is about a quarter mile northwest.

It shares its name with the Alleghany Turnpike, built from Salem to Christiansburg between 1806 and 1809, which made the town a stop on a market route west. The town’s oldest streets are close by: the South Franklin Street Historic District about half a mile west, the courthouse square about six-tenths of a mile northwest, and the East Main Street Historic District a little farther.
