History

Postwar houses below South Franklin.

Lynwood Terrace was built in a single burst: more than four of every five of its houses on record went up in the 1950s, when the town’s population grew from 2,299 in 1940 to 3,653 in 1960.

It sits about a fifth of a mile south of the South Franklin Street Historic District, whose houses run from the mid-1800s to the 1930s along a street laid out in the town’s first plan and once labeled Little River, for where it led. The courthouse square, where Main and Franklin streets meet at a public square 264 feet across, is about a third of a mile north.
