History
Built over seven decades.
Highland Park was laid out in numbered sections, among them Highland Park 2, Highland Park 6 and the Highland Park Addition in the county’s records, and it has been built over a long stretch: its houses on record date from 1940 to the 2020s, with the 1960s the busiest decade. Its streets take the names of trees and birds: Cherry Lane, Oak Drive, Hummingbird Drive and Robin Road.
The town’s oldest streets are about six-tenths of a mile northeast: the courthouse square, laid out in the 1790s where Main and Cross streets met, and the South Franklin Street Historic District. The Harkrader Sports Complex, opened in 2006, is about seven-tenths of a mile west.
