History

Postwar houses near the square.

Highview Terrace was built in the town’s postwar growth, when the population rose from 2,299 in 1940 to 3,653 in 1960. Its houses on record date from 1945 to 1964, and more than four of every five went up in the 1950s.

The courthouse square, where Main and Franklin streets meet, is about four-tenths of a mile north, and the South Franklin Street Historic District about the same distance northeast. The county built its first courthouse in the center of that square in 1808; the square’s shape is still the one on the town’s oldest map, of about 1806.
