History

A farm lane becomes a street.

Atkinson Acres lines Atkinson Road on the south side of Christiansburg, with a few more houses on Chrisman Street and Carson Drive. It is a small subdivision of about fifty lots, most a little under half an acre, inside the town limits. The federal names database lists it as a named place.

The government maps show how it began. In the survey of 1931 and 1932 this was farmland where dirt roads met south of town. The 1965 map, drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1963, shows an unpaved farm lane running northeast, where Atkinson Road now runs, from a small pond toward Sunset Cemetery, with a few buildings beside it. The town’s built-up area, shaded pink on the map, came right up to the lane on the north, and the new Interstate 81, opened from Newbern to Christiansburg in November 1965, ran just to the south.

Then the lane filled in. County records date one house to 1968, 25 to the 1970s and 25 to the 1980s, the last of them in 1989; the houses on Chrisman Street went up mostly from 1978 on. The government’s 1978 revision already shows the first new houses at the west end, printed in the purple ink it used for additions.

Sunset Cemetery, a 34-acre burial ground on South Franklin Street in the county’s records, lies a short walk to the northeast.
