History

Farm fields along an old state road.

Stafford Farm, recorded by the county as Staffords Farm Subdivision, is a neighborhood of about forty-five houses on Meadow Drive, Alexander Court, Jessie Circle and Katie Lane, in the northwest part of Christiansburg. It lies on the west side of Stafford Drive, about a third of a mile north of Peppers Ferry Road (State Route 114).

Stafford Drive is the oldest thing here. The government’s 1965 map, drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1963, shows it as a two-lane country road running north from the Peppers Ferry road past a few farmhouses, with the state route number 643; by the 1983 revision the map numbered it 700. West of the road the map shows nothing but open, rolling fields at about 2,080 feet, with a small stream and a farm pond off to the southwest. In 1983 the new streets of Belmont Estates had been drawn in just to the west, but these fields were still empty.

Detail of a 1965 topographic map: a two-lane road with a red 643 route sign running from top to bottom just right of center, a few black and open building squares along it, open ground with light brown contour lines and the elevation 2080 to its left, a small blue pond and stream with a patch of green woods at lower left, and woods at the top corners.
1965: the country road numbered 643, today’s Stafford Drive, and the open fields west of it, left of center, where Stafford Farm was built from 2004.U.S. Geological Survey, Historical Topographic Map Collection, Blacksburg quadrangle, 1965

The subdivision came all at once. The Town’s report for its 2003 to 2004 year lists about 2,500 feet of new water mains and 3,450 feet of sewer, with twenty manholes, laid for “Stafford’s Farm,” and county records date the first houses to 2004. Its streets were built by the developer to a width of 30 feet and listed by the Town as new pavement in its 2005 to 2006 year: Meadow Drive at 950 feet, Alexander Court at 633, Katie Lane at 580 and Jessie Circle at 264. By 2006 every lot had a house. The plat, in the county’s Plat Book 23, also set aside open space along Stafford Drive and a stormwater pond, deeded as common land in 2005.
