History
Why the town came to Belmont.
Belmont Estates was laid out outside the town, north of Christiansburg near Route 114, and its story shows why the town limits moved. In 1977 lots were platted in one portion of the subdivision; a county study of the Route 114 area in 1980 found that 22 of 23 of them had soils that would not take a septic system. When the state’s Commission on Local Government reviewed the town’s proposed annexation in 1987, it noted that the county’s own wastewater study had named Belmont Estates and Belmont Farms among the six areas in Montgomery County most in need of sewer lines, and the Town planned to extend sewer to them within three years of annexation.

The neighborhood shares its name with Belmont, the crossroads community on Route 114, Peppers Ferry Road, whose name comes from the French for beautiful mount. Its houses on record have gone up from the 1970s on, with the 1990s the busiest decade.
