History

A farm lane by the Huckleberry.

Hunters Ridge is a community of about forty-five townhomes on Providence Boulevard and Hunters Ridge Lane, just south of Cambria Street in the northwest part of Christiansburg, beside the Sleepy Hollow and Henley Place neighborhoods.

When federal surveyors mapped this ground in 1931 and 1932, it was a farm slope above a small stream. A farm lane wound across it from the east to a farmhouse at its west end, and about a quarter mile to the north ran the railroad known as the Huckleberry, which carried coal from the Merrimac mine and passengers between Blacksburg and the station at Cambria from 1904. The map labels a church beside the tracks Allegheny. On the government’s 1965 map, drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1963, the lane and the open slope are still there, with a few houses where the lane met the road to Cambria; the Huckleberry had made its last steam run in 1958. By the 1983 revision the lane had been redrawn as a street, today’s Cambria Street, but the slope south of it was still open.

Detail of a 1930s topographic map in brown contour lines: the words Allegheny Ch at the top, a railroad drawn as a black line with cross ties curving down from the top and turning east, a double dashed farm lane winding from the right across the middle to a small black farmhouse square at the left, and a dotted blue stream along the bottom.
The federal survey of 1931 and 1932: the Huckleberry railroad curving past the church labeled Allegheny, top, and the farm lane across the slope, center, where Hunters Ridge was built from 1998.U.S. Geological Survey, Historical Topographic Map Collection, Blacksburg quadrangle, 1937

Hunters Ridge was built in three phases in six years. The first, on a plat in the county’s Plat Book 18, put six townhomes on Providence Boulevard in 1998 and 1999. The second, in Plat Book 22, added twenty on Hunters Ridge Lane in 2001, and the third, in Plat Book 23, twenty more on Providence Boulevard in 2004. Each phase kept a piece of common land, three parcels in all.
