History
A hundred and forty-five narrow lots.
South Hill Park sits at the southwest edge of town, where West Main Street runs out toward the interstate and Mud Pike branches off to the west. The road has forked here for a long time. A Confederate engineers’ map of the county drawn in 1864 shows the road leaving Christiansburg to the southwest past houses marked Dr. Stone and Mrs. Long, then splitting: one branch west toward the farms along what the map, farther on, calls the Old Mud Turnpike, and one south.
The subdivision was drawn as a long run of narrow lots, numbered at least to 145. The county’s records date one house, on South Hill Drive, to 1930, and several lots cite a plat or deed in the county’s Deed Book 121, a volume from about 1941. Most of the early houses went up along South Hill Drive and West Main Street in the 1950s. Nearly every house sits on several of the original lots joined together: lots 28 to 31 for one house, 62 to 67 for another, 108 to 111 for a third.

The 1965 government map shows about ten houses along South Hill Drive and Auburn Drive still open ground, just outside the town limits, with the new Interstate 81 and its interchange already in place along the south edge. Then the rest filled in almost at once: from 1992 to 1994 nearly twenty houses went up, most of them on Auburn Drive and many in a section the county records as the South Hill Park Addition.
The old lots keep shaping new building. In 2007 the Town approved plats joining lots 126 through 129 on Auburn Drive into one lot for a new house, and lots 50 through 52 on South Hill Drive into another. About six-tenths of a mile south, across the interstate, rises the summit the federal names database calls Poorhouse Knob; the 1937 map prints the word Poorhouse near it.
