History
A drive-in next door.
Craig Mountain shares its name with James Craig, at whose house the county’s justices were told to meet in 1789 to choose a site for the courthouse. Craig gave the county title to land for its public buildings, and he was among the nine trustees named when the General Assembly established Christiansburg in 1792. No source we found says how the neighborhood got its name.
Its nearest landmark is a survivor. The Starlite Drive-In, about a fifth of a mile east, opened in 1953 and, by the Town’s account, still runs as one of the few drive-in theaters left in the country. The state’s 1934 marker for the town stands about four-tenths of a mile northwest, on Roanoke Street.
