History
Annexed in 1988.
Belmont Farms is a subdivision of houses north of downtown, most of them built in the 1960s. It was outside the town until 1988, when, by the Town’s account, an annexation brought Belmont Farms into the town limits along with the site of the New River Valley Mall, then under construction, a former Virginia Tech horticulture farm and the top of Christiansburg Mountain.
The need for sewer was part of the reason. When the state’s Commission on Local Government reviewed the town’s proposed annexation in 1987, it noted that the county’s wastewater study had named Belmont Farms and Belmont Estates among the six areas in Montgomery County most in need of sewer lines, and the Town planned to extend sewer to them within three years of annexation.

It shares its name with Belmont, a crossroads community on Route 114, Peppers Ferry Road, about a third of a mile to the northwest. The name comes from the French for beautiful mount.
