History

A mayor’s name on the old Salem road.

Teel Street leaves Roanoke Street, U.S. 11 and 460, on the east side of town. The highway here is the old road to Salem. A Confederate engineers’ map of the county drawn in 1864 labels it the Macadamized Road, a hard-surfaced turnpike, and marks two houses on it right about where Teel Street now begins, labeled Kyle and Johnston. Crab Creek, the stream that runs west past Cambria, rises just to the west; the federal names database places its source a few hundred yards from the neighborhood.

The subdivision bears the name of W. Ward Teel. Born in Riner in 1924, Ward Teel was Christiansburg’s mayor from 1962 to 1966, and the Town’s history pictures him with Cambria’s mayor at the merger of the two towns, which it dates to the last day of 1965. He later served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1973 to 1982. The county’s records show the subdivision laid out in two blocks of numbered lots, with plat references in Deed Book 196, a volume from about 1955.

Detail of a 1965 topographic map: a red highway marked 11 and 460 crossing the bottom, a narrow dashed red outline around a lane running north from it with three small house squares, green woods beside it, a pond to the east, and an interstate cloverleaf at the right edge.

Building came slowly. The government map made from 1963 aerial photographs shows Teel Street as a lane off the highway with three houses and woods along its west side, and the revised editions of 1972 and 1982 show houses filling in along it. In the county’s records the oldest house dates to 1965 and the busiest decade was the 1980s, with more going up into the 2000s. Most houses sit on several of the original small lots, and a few of the lots near the highway hold businesses.
