History

At the foot of the cloverleaf.

Falling Branch Townhouses stand just south of the place where Interstate 81 meets U.S. 11 and 460 on the east side of Christiansburg. When federal surveyors mapped the area in 1932, the Lee Highway ran here between farms, with a small stream just south of it. There was no interchange and no interstate.

The government map made from 1963 aerial photographs shows the change. A full cloverleaf, which the map labels Interchange 37, had been built where the new interstate crossed the highway, and the land where the townhouses now stand lay right at its southern foot, beside the secondary road numbered 734. On the hills beyond, the map marks four small cemeteries. The revised maps of 1972 and 1982 still show the site open.

The townhouses came in two phases, recorded in the county’s Plat Books 12 to 14, with a common area. County records date the first ones on Glade Drive to 1985 and the last to 1988. They share a name with Falling Branch, the larger neighborhood next door that was built in numbered sections from about 1980, and with the stream Falling Branch, which rises to the west and runs east through the valley to the south.
