History

Townhouses on the farm lanes off the Lee Highway.

Huff Heritage lies on the rolling ground south of Roanoke Street, U.S. 11 and 460, on the east side of Christiansburg. When federal surveyors mapped it in 1932, it was farmland: two farm lanes ran south from the Lee Highway on either side of it, a 2,305-foot knob rose about half a mile to the west, and Walnut Branch wound past the knob’s far side. Falling Branch, the stream that shares its name with the road the neighborhood opens onto, rises about half a mile to the south-southeast, by the federal names database.

The decades that followed changed the land around it. By the time of the government map made from 1963 aerial photographs, the knob to the west carried a drive-in theater; the Town’s history dates the Starlite Drive-In to 1953. The same map shows the new Interstate 81 running about a third of a mile to the south.

The 1932 survey, printed in 1937. The dashed outline marks Huff Heritage between two farm lanes south of the Lee Highway, U.S. 11; the knob marked 2305 is where the drive-in later went up.U.S. Geological Survey, Historical Topographic Map Collection, Blacksburg quadrangle, 1937

The Town’s 2008 to 2009 annual report lists its two streets among the year’s new pavement: Huff Heritage Lane, 1,016 feet long, and Kitty Lane, 425 feet.
