History
Next door to old Cambria.
Cambriatowne, on Collins Street and South Grant Street, sits about a fifth of a mile southeast of the Cambria Historic District, and it carries the old town’s name. The village grew up around the railroad depot a mile north of the courthouse after the tracks arrived in 1854. It was called Bangs, then Ronald, and took the name Cambria in 1892, from the rock formation beneath it. It was incorporated as a town in 1906 and joined Christiansburg in the mid-1960s.
The historic district holds the depot of about 1869, now a freight station, the passenger station of 1906, the Surface-Lee Block of 1908 and houses on Depot, Montgomery and Cambria streets from the 1850s to about 1930. About a third of a mile west, on High Street at the crest of Zion Hill between Cambria and Christiansburg, stands the Surface House, a one-story cottage of about 1870 with a bracketed hipped roof, also on the National Register.
