History

The hilltop that kept its fields.

Warren Heights sits on a hilltop west of downtown, at about 2,200 feet, above Radford Street. When federal surveyors mapped the area in 1932, they printed the town’s own name, CHRISTIANSBURG, in large letters right across this hillside, with the bench mark elevation 2,089 beneath it. The ground itself was open farmland.

The road at the foot of the hill is old. A Confederate engineers’ map of 1864 labels it the Turnpike, and the 1932 survey marks it as the Lee Highway, U.S. 11. Between the hill and the highway the 1965 map names Shaffer Memorial Cemetery. A little farther west, the map numbers Chrisman Mill Road as Route 661, the road the Town’s history says led to the Chrisman Mill on Crab Creek.

Detail of a 1965 topographic map: a small dashed red outline on an open hilltop above the label Shaffer Memorial Cem, a red highway marked U.S. 11 and 3 Lane along the bottom, the pink built-up area of town to the east with the labels Hospital and High Sch.

Through every revision of the government map, in 1965, 1970, 1978 and 1983, this hilltop stays empty, just outside the town’s built-up area and, in 1965, just outside its limits. Warren Heights was finally platted along a single street, Warren Court, recorded in the county’s Plat Book 16. Its houses went up from 1996 to 2001, twenty-three of them in the 1990s.
