History
A 1940s neighborhood west of downtown.
Victory Heights is one of the town’s 1940s neighborhoods: its earliest houses on record date from 1939, and nearly two of every three went up in the 1940s. Lots in a later section, the Victory Heights Extension, on Wimmer Street and Light Street, were redrawn in 2012.
The town grew from 2,299 people in 1940 to 3,653 in 1960. The courthouse square is about six-tenths of a mile east, and the town’s Downtown Park about four-tenths. In 1957 Kroger built a free-standing supermarket with a large parking lot at 112 West Main Street.
