History
West of Mr. Wade’s, 1864.
In 1864, Confederate engineers mapping Montgomery County drew the country just north of Christiansburg in fine detail: the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad along Crab Creek, the depot a mile out of town, a saw mill, and the houses of families named Lucas and Latimer. About three-tenths of a mile east of today’s Overlook Court they marked a house labeled Mr. Wade, and just north of it, on the stream, Wade’s mill. The Wade family were merchants and businessmen in Christiansburg from the early 1800s. Wades Lane, the street that runs past the neighborhood, shares their name.
The ground under Overlook Court stayed open for a long time after that. The government map made from 1963 aerial photographs shows it as a field beside a large new building on Wades Lane, the site the county’s records list today as Christiansburg Elementary School, and the revised editions of 1970, 1978 and 1983 still show it empty.

The houses came in the 2000s. In the Town’s 2004 to 2005 fiscal year, new water and sewer mains, about 1,000 and 800 feet, were laid for Overlook Court, and the next year the Town recorded Overlook Drive as 845 feet of new street, 30 feet wide. Twelve of its thirteen houses went up in 2006, and the subdivision keeps a small recreation area as common ground.

Wades Lane, beside the neighborhood, shares its name with the Wade household and Wade’s mill marked just east of here in 1864.
