History

Hollows in the hillside.

White Pines sits on the hills north of Roanoke Street at the far east end of Christiansburg. In 1864 a Confederate engineers’ map labeled the road below it the Macadamized Road, the turnpike to Salem, with houses marked Murray and Edmonson along it. When federal surveyors mapped the area in 1932, they drew something unusual right where White Pine Drive runs today: a string of small closed hollows, shown with the hatched contour lines that mark depressions in the ground. North of it the Norfolk and Western Railway ran past a place the map labels Houchins, and to the northwest the map prints the word Kettle along a ridge, beside the valley the federal names database calls Kettle Hollow.

Detail of a 1937 topographic map in brown contour lines: a railroad labeled Norfolk at top, the word Kettle along a ridge, many small closed contour rings with hatch marks, a dashed red outline around a row of them, and a highway labeled Highway and 3 Lane along the bottom.
The 1932 survey, printed in 1937. The dashed outline marks today’s White Pines; the small hatched rings inside it are closed depressions in the ground. The Norfolk and Western railroad crosses the top, and the Lee Highway the bottom.U.S. Geological Survey, Historical Topographic Map Collection, Blacksburg quadrangle, 1937

The neighborhood grew in three plats, which the county records as White Pine Subdivision, White Pine Court and White Pines Subdivision. One house on White Pine Drive dates to 1940 in the county’s records; three followed in the early 1960s and six in the 1970s, on White Pine Drive and Evergreen Drive. The newest sections, recorded in the county’s Plat Book 22, filled in with fifteen houses from 2001 to 2005, ten of them on Wood Ridge Drive.

The federal names database lists White Pine itself as a named place, and the Town paved White Pine Drive in its 2007 to 2008 year.
