History
Where the schoolhouse stood in 1864.
Wheatland Court sits on a rise north of Christiansburg, just east of the old road to Blacksburg. In 1864, when Confederate engineers mapped the county, that road was the main way north, and about a tenth of a mile west of today’s Wheatland Court they marked a building labeled School house beside it. To the southwest a dashed track crossed the farms, labeled Bridle Path.
Later maps show a church nearby. The government survey of 1932 labels it Allegheny, and the railroad to Blacksburg, the coal and passenger line called the Huckleberry, ran just to the west. The map made from 1963 aerial photographs still shows Alleghany Church just south of the site, with the new divided U.S. 460 curving past to the west, a telephone line crossing the fields, and, a little to the south, a radio tower labeled WJJJ, the call letters a Christiansburg AM station carried from 1966 to 1995.

The eighteen condominium homes on Wheatland Court went up in 1998, recorded in the county’s Plat Book 16, the same year as the large building at 203 Wheatland Court that county records list as the Wheatland retirement community. The land was then just outside the town limits. In 2007, at the owners’ request, the Town and the county agreed to a boundary adjustment that brought about 48 acres there, which the Town Council minutes call the Woody, Wheatland and Hairston lands, into Christiansburg.
