History

Laid out beside Belmont Church.

Rolling Hills lies in the county west of Christiansburg, south of Peppers Ferry Road (State Route 114), in the farm community long known as Belmont. A 1987 state report on the town’s annexation described Belmont as the country between Slate Branch and Crab Creek, reaching from Christiansburg’s boundary west to Vicker, about four and a half square miles. The town took in the eastern part of it in 1988; Rolling Hills stayed in the county.

The federal survey of 1931 and 1932 already prints the name Belmont on the crossroads just east of this land, where farm lanes branched off the road from town. On the 1965 map, drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1963, the church is labeled Belmont Ch, with a cemetery beside it, and the land around it is open fields with a few farm lanes. The church and its cemetery stand at the east edge of Rolling Hills today, beside Dominion Drive. Crab Creek and the Norfolk and Western Railway run through the valley to the southwest.

Detail of a 1965 topographic map: a red highway running diagonally from upper left to right, small black buildings along it, the labels Cem and Belmont Ch at a road fork right of center, open land with dashed farm lanes to the left of the church, roads marked 660 and 661 below, a railroad labeled Norfolk at lower left and patches of green woods.
1965: Belmont Church and its cemetery at the road fork, right of center, and the open land around and west of it where Rolling Hills grew from the mid-1960s. The highway is Peppers Ferry Road.U.S. Geological Survey, Historical Topographic Map Collection, Blacksburg quadrangle, 1965

The first houses, on Whispering Pine Circle and Dominion Drive, date to 1965, and the subdivision grew section by section through the 1970s, the decade of 72 of its houses, out along Rolling Hills Drive, Plateau Drive and Lupine Lane. By 1983 the government’s map printed the name Rolling Hills over the new streets. Lots run a little under half an acre.

The plats were drawn around older ground. A small tax-exempt parcel in the fifth section holds a family burial ground, recorded in the county’s cemetery survey as Gilmore Cemetery #2, and the survey records a second Gilmore burial ground on Dominion Drive, also within the subdivision.
