History
One street, then two, on a ridge south of town.
Walnut Grove runs west along a ridge from South Franklin Street, on the south side of Christiansburg, its houses lining two long, parallel streets, Overland Drive and Mulberry Drive. The federal names database lists it as a named place, and the county records it as a subdivision of four sections, about 120 lots in all, inside the town limits.
In the survey of 1931 and 1932 this was a farm ridge west of the road south from town, now South Franklin Street and, farther on, Pilot Road. Rose Hill, a wooded ridge topping 2,500 feet, rises to the south.
Overland Drive came first. County records date its first houses to 1960, and the 1965 government map, drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1963, shows a single street running west from the main road into the ridge with a handful of houses on it, a water tank and an electric substation just to the north, and the new Interstate 81 a short way beyond. Most of Overland’s houses went up in the later 1960s. Mulberry Drive followed in the 1970s: it appears, with its houses, in the purple ink the government used for additions when it revised the map in 1978. Building went on into the 1980s, and county records count 28 houses from the 1960s, 48 from the 1970s and 32 from the 1980s.
