History
Big lots above Smith Creek.
Smith Creek is a subdivision of large lots in the hills south of Christiansburg, in the county, off Smith Creek Road (State Route 675). It shares its name with the stream that runs along the road below it. Its houses stand on Red Hawk Run, Falcon Run and Wild Turkey Run, on lots that typically measure more than three acres, and the land is still zoned for agriculture.
Before the houses, this was farm country at a meeting of roads and streams. The federal survey of 1931 and 1932 shows Smith Creek winding east under steep ridges, a road coming south from Christiansburg past the mouth of Kingston Hollow, farm lanes climbing to farmsteads on the slopes, and, at the fork where the roads met just west of this land, a school, labeled Nixon Sch. Rose Hill, a ridge topping 2,500 feet, rises to the northeast. The government’s 1965 map, drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1963, labels no school at the fork, shows woods on the ridges and open fields on the slopes, and gives Smith Creek Road the route number 675.

The subdivision was recorded in the mid-1990s, on a plat in the county’s Plat Book 16, with a small second section of larger lots recorded as Smith Creek II. County records date 22 houses to the second half of the 1990s and fourteen more since 2000. The plat also set aside a parcel of more than 77 acres that the county records simply as “Park,” nearly a third of the subdivision’s land.
Timeline

- 1995The first houses go up, on a plat recorded in the county’s Plat Book 16.
- 1990sTwenty-two houses are built in the decade’s last five years.
- 2021The newest house on the county’s books is built, on Falcon Run.
