History
The hill the map called Industrial School.
Diamond Hill South is a neighborhood of about fifty houses on George Edward Via, Citrine Court and Amethyst Drive, on the hillside north of Crab Creek and the railroad, west of Cambria in the northwest part of Christiansburg. Its gem-named streets match its neighbors, Diamond Hill and Diamond Pointe.
When federal surveyors mapped this ground in 1931 and 1932, they printed two words across the hillside: Industrial School. That was the map’s label for the Christiansburg Industrial Institute. The school had begun in 1866, when an agent of the Freedmen’s Bureau started teaching freedpeople in Christiansburg, and in 1895 it was reorganized under the supervision of Booker T. Washington. In 1898 and 1899 it bought 87 acres on the north bank of Crab Creek, about two miles west of its Hill School in town, and in 1905 another 85.63 acres of farmland, and there it built a farm campus with dormitories, a dairy, a barn and shops, where students worked the land and learned trades. Its classroom building, the Edgar A. Long Building, went up in 1927. On the map a farm lane winds down this hill to the Norfolk and Western Railway along the creek.

The school’s last class graduated in 1966, and the county school board sold the campus in 1967. A sketch of the campus as it stood about then marks a principal’s cemetery at its west end, and the county’s cemetery survey records the Long Cemetery (Christiansburg Institute) about a third of a mile east of these houses, behind homes farther along George Edward Via, on land still described as Institute property, well kept and with a Christiansburg Institute bench. The Long Building stands on Scattergood Drive to the east and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
On the government’s 1965 map, drawn from aerial photographs taken in 1963, the hill is open ground with the same lane and a few outbuildings, and it was unchanged on the 1983 revision. The houses came forty years after the school closed. Section IV, on a plat in the county’s Plat Book 22, filled George Edward Via from 2002 to 2006; section V, in Plat Book 24, added Citrine Court and Amethyst Drive from 2004 to 2007. The Town’s report for its 2005 to 2006 year lists the new streets, built by the developer 30 feet wide: 1,425 feet of George Edward Via, 949 of Citrine Court and 580 of Amethyst Drive. Lots run a little under half an acre.
