History

Shelburne’s Mill country.

Country Meadow Estates lies in the valley of Meadow Creek, southwest of Christiansburg, outside the town limits. The creek rises near Grand View Estates and runs southwest through here, and the government map made from 1963 aerial photographs labels it simply Meadow, with three small cemeteries on the hills around it.

A century earlier, Confederate engineers mapping the county wrote down the families along every road in this corner of it. Their 1864 map shows a mill, Shelburne’s Mill, with the homes of Rev. Shelburne and S. Shelburne nearby; J. H. Simpkins, Mrs. Gunter and the Tompsons close by; T. D. Childress to the south; a Meadow Creek Church; and, along the Old Mud Turnpike to the north, Graham, Currin and J. C. Kinser. Several of those names are still on the map today. Shelburne Drive, Currin Lane, Childress Road and Meadow Creek Road all run within a mile or so of Country Meadow Drive, and Currin Lane touches the subdivision itself.

Detail of a hand-drawn 1864 map in brown, red, green and blue ink: blue streams winding through hills, a mill symbol labeled Shelburne’s Mill, and handwritten names including Rev. Shelburne, S. Shelburne, J. H. Simpkins, Mrs. Gunter, Chas. Tompson, Meadow Creek Ch., T. D. Childress, Currin and Mud.

The subdivision was recorded in the county’s Plat Book 9, in large lots: the median is about five acres, and the lots together cover about two hundred acres, still zoned for agriculture. Its first house on record went up in 1977, and the 1980s were its busiest decade, with seventeen houses. The revised government map of 1978 still shows the valley as open farmland around the first of them.
