Cambria Trail

Cambria to downtown A 10-foot-wide paved multi-use trail is in design from Cambria Square, where Depot Street meets Cambria Street, to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. A second phase is expected to continue along Depot Street to Roanoke Street. Phase 1 is funded through VDOT revenue sharing at 50 percent. I-81 Northbound Widening, Mile Marker 116 to Exit 128

VDOT Interstate 81 Corridor Improvement Program project to add a third northbound lane between mile marker 116 and Exit 128 in Montgomery County, the stretch that includes Exit 118 (U.S. 460) at Christiansburg; southbound is already three lanes. VDOT's Improve 81 page, updated September 22, 2026, lists an estimated start of spring 2030 and completion in winter 2035. The NRV MPO 2050 plan lists the project at an estimated $502,000,000. Roanoke Street at Depot Street pedestrian improvements and Roanoke Street sidewalk and crossing

Roanoke Street east of downtown On August 11, 2026 Town Council awarded a $1,198,644.03 construction contract to Jones Road & Bridge, Inc. and a $126,984.55 inspection task order to A. Morton Thomas & Associates for the Roanoke Street at Depot Street pedestrian accommodations and the Roanoke Street sidewalk and crossing projects. North Franklin Street and Depot Street intersection improvements

Downtown north The Town's design for North Franklin Street at Depot Street (anticipated cost $5.3 million, 0.27 miles) reduces North Franklin to one through lane each way with a center turn lane, converts College Street to right-in, right-out only, upgrades the signal and adds pedestrian facilities. The design public hearing was held December 18, 2024. The Town's project page lists right-of-way acquisition in late spring and summer 2025, construction starting in spring 2027 and completion in spring 2028. College Street drainage improvements, Phase II

Downtown west On August 11, 2026 Town Council awarded a $2,931,160 construction contract to Jones Road & Bridge, Inc. and a $180,009.72 inspection task order to RK&K for Phase II of the College Street drainage improvements near downtown. Hickok Street downtown drainage improvements

The Town is rebuilding part of the downtown storm drainage system along Hickok Street to reduce flooding under downtown businesses. The Town's project page puts the construction cost at $4.4 million, half paid by VDOT revenue sharing, and says Hickok Street is closed between College Street and Main Street until the project is complete. New River Valley passenger rail station at Cambria

A new Amtrak station is being built at the Cambria site in Christiansburg, with a platform and canopy, parking, access roads, track and signal work, and a train layover facility in Radford. Ground was broken on April 24, 2025. Virginia Tech reported service is expected to begin in 2027 with two daily round trips to Washington, D.C.
